topic of the day; news (novelty, heart-swelling) of the day; talk of the town; topical subject; urgent problemОбычные занятия и игры уходят на самый задний план. Котята своим появлением на свет затемняют всё и выступают как живая новость и злоба дня. (А. Чехов, Событие) — Ordinary occupations and games were quite forgotten. Шолохов, Поднятая целина) — He'd talk to every Red Army man, and he had a kind word for them all. If one of them got the wind up before a battle, he'd talk to him quietly and cheer him up. And he knew how to put the reckless ones in their place so that they wouldn't even think of making a fuss or getting their backs up.
